With the introduction of mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), the UK government has put the importance of nature at the forefront of its climate risk mitigation policy. The real estate sector is now firmly in the spotlight with BNG requiring new projects to avoid harm to nature and retain, protect and enhance onsite and offsite habitats.

Leading investors have an opportunity to differentiate themselves and their real estate portfolios through robust nature strategies. 43% of investors from JLL’s 2024 UK Investor Survey have a biodiversity and/or nature strategy in place, with a further 22% stating they are currently developing one.

Prioritising nature offers multiple benefits, helping investors and developers meet ESG targets, future-proof their assets, adhere to legislative compliance, enhance climate resilience, improve human health and wellbeing, and support local regeneration.
