Retailers receive pre-Christmas boost​​

Retail sales volumes were up 0.2% in November from the previous month, and 5.9% on November 2015, according to the ONS. Retailers saw continued growth in the run-up to Christmas, as consumer spending remains buoyant, despite wider worries about the impact of Brexit on the economy. Department stores and household goods stores had a particularly strong month, especially in sales of electronic goods, boosted by Black Friday deals.

Sales volumes were also boosted by the record tourist spend, which was up 41% in November, according to Global Blue. The tourism influx, particularly to London’s West End, has been driven mainly by Asian visitors looking to take advantage of the weak pound. Chinese visitor spend, accounting for a quarter of total tourist spend, was up by 63% in November, Taiwanese visitor spend increased by 160%, while shoppers from Hong Kong and the US increased their spend by 127% and 88% respectively.

In other news, the F&B sector is accelerating its move online, as food delivery companies intensify their battle for market share. London based online food delivery company Just Eat has acquired Hungry House, and Canada's SkipTheDishes, as it looks to expand its presence in the sector. And competitor Deliveroo is also expanding, via its 'Roobox kitchen' concept.  The concept, which incorporates physical kitchens without any restaurant attached, was launched earlier this year; Deliveroo is planning to take the number of Roobox sites from three to 20 by the end of this year, and to have 150 bricks and mortar sites across the country by the end of 2017.
