Clifton College Celebrates 150th Anniversary in Style

A 150th birthday with a difference, two spectacular large-scale events on the Close:
'Classic Car Wheeze': cars, stars, jet engines and the world's fastest vehicle
'Motion Picture Son et Lumière': the UK's largest-ever cinematic, light and music show

Clifton College, Bristol, celebrates an extremely special anniversary in 2012. On the 30th September, the historic School jubilantly reaches its 150th  anniversary. Leading-up to this landmark occasion, two spectacular summer events, sponsored by international property consultants Jones Lang LaSalle, are planned.
The Classic Car Wheeze
Sunday 20th May, 11.00am–4.00pm
Clifton College's evocative Close will be host to vintage and classic cars, motorbikes, jet engines, a hot air balloon, helicopter, hovercraft, F1 simulator and high-speed radio controlled cars. There will also be a special Rolls-Royce kit car building competition and champion supersonic car, ‘the Bloodhound', showing how incredible thrust capabilities help it reach 1000mph.
The special day celebrates all that's magnificent about the history and future of transport and sees a wide range of the finest vintage and classic vehicles sparkle in the May sunshine. Classic Car Club owners of Alvis, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Porsche and Bristol will all exhibit beautiful examples of car design. There are 200 places available for Classic Car enthusiasts to display heritage vehicles. Places are limited, so please apply soon.
Mixing with celebrities in the fairground atmosphere of stalls, music and entertainment will be 5,000+ people, all taking part in an enjoyable day out that helps raise essential funds to support the following charities: The Prince’s Trust, Great Western Air Ambulance, a Life for a Cure and the NSPCC.
Motion Picture Son et Lumière
Friday 6th July, 6.30pm–11.00pm
Clifton College will host a new genre of colossal entertainment on Friday 6th July. The UK's largest ever cinema-led Son et Lumière is the brainchild of Michael Hirst (Writer of the film ‘Elizabeth’, and Writer and Executive Producer of The Tudors) and internationally acclaimed TV, Film and Media Producer, Chris Hunt.
The thrilling piece is a gigantic event that will light up the Bristol skyline using the striking architecture of Clifton College as the canvas to project immense light and sound. The awe-inspiring medium brings to life significant historic events and famous people, all expertly interspersed with classic moments from film and School archives.
The open-air, picnic style concert with 10,000 attending will end with an explosion of drama, humour and pathos set to a backdrop of music, light and film. It is a completely new experience, content for which is under wraps… however a little research into Clifton's famous alumni and historic Bristol/UK moments will give the curious some ideas.
Just before the cinematic, sound and light extravaganza, a stirring concert involving local groups and musicians will be performed followed by a rousing professional orchestra playing a captivating film-related musical score. We invite the press and public to come to be amazed, surprised and entertained. To find out more, please visit
