Planning success heralds bright future for wholesale business

Established Pollokshields firm will now double in size

Glasgow, 11 December 2012 -, Jones Lang LaSalle has secured consent for a 15,600 sq ft extension to a cash and carry warehouse in Pollokshields, Glasgow,  on behalf of United Wholesale (Scotland) Ltd.

The development will almost double the size of the popular local business, and secure its future. The approved extension will be the third of three phases, which have so far seen car parking and office space provision increased at the site.

The existing warehouse building, at 204 Maxwell Road, is currently used by 3,000 customers – 750 every day. Floorspace will increase from 21,500 to 37,000 sq ft during the expansion, an increase of 73 per cent.

Shahid Ali, senior planner at Jones Lang LaSalle, said: “UWS has a great reputation for supplying quality goods, and the demand for wholesale is evident from the number of customers who use its services.

“In order to meet the identified needs of the community there was a requirement to extend the existing premises. Thanks to planning consent this will now result in a significant commitment and investment programme in Pollokshields.

“With its historical ties to the area, the first choice for United Wholesale was always to stay in Pollokshields. The company is delighted to have acquired planning consent from Glasgow City Council for the expansion, on behalf of all its dedicated staff and loyal customers.”

UWS has served the Central Belt for 35 years, supplying wholesale goods to the retail, restaurant and food sectors. The family-owned business currently employs 72 staff, with that number expected to increase substantially once the expansion plans are complete. Seventy per cent of the company’s current staff live within walking distance of the warehouse.

UWS operate from two bases in Glasgow – the Pollokshields site, located just a quarter of a mile from the M8 motorway, and another on Easter Queenslie Industrial Estate, in the east of the city.
