JLL’s UK Head of Sustainability comments on the Government’s financial boost for electric vehicles and clean air

Following today’s Budget announcement

London, 22 November, 2017 - Commenting on today’s Budget announcement of a financial boost for electric vehicles and clean air, Sophie Walker, Head of Sustainability, JLL UK, said:

“A major barrier in the uptake of electric vehicles is limited charging facilities, especially on street charging points, so we welcome the Government’s £400m charging infrastructure fund as well as the level of ambition set out in the Clean Growth Strategy. Market research tells us that charging infrastructure – both local authority and private businesses has a long way to go with the average number of charging points per shopping centre standing at just 0.68. Today’s news provides a significant opportunity for landlords and car park operators to invest early and potentially access government grant funding.”

Walker added: “While it was inspiring to hear that the Government will provide £220m of support for local authorities to help implement their air quality plans, it does appear to sit in direct contradiction with its plans to freeze fuel duty on petrol and diesel cars. Given the public health implications, as a country, we need to be even bolder on air quality improvements – let’s hope that £220m is merely the starting point for the change that needs to happen."
