JLL UK Retail comments on M&S announcements

​8 November 2016 - Commenting on the announcements by M&S regarding moves to close some stores and convert others to dedicated food stores, Tim Vallance head of JLL UK Retail, said: “The move by M&S to streamline their portfolio shows strong and positive management and an appreciation for changing digital trends. The strength of the retailer’s brand, service, offering and provenance means that the rationalisation they are doing at the moment should help them transcend any headwinds around Brexit, the changes happening as Millennials shape new consumer trends and the next global financial crisis. The decision to focus on food is also wise, given that they have proven to be the most resilient grocer in the world, surviving unscathed from the price war between the Big 4 and Aldi and Lidl.

“They have also been bold with investment in their online platform and store modernisation. They now have a very effective digital platform and a better integration of the physical and virtual retail worlds.”
