JLL UK Retail responds to Government’s defeat on Sunday trading laws vote

LONDON , 10th March 2016- Commenting on the House of Commons vote on relaxation of Sunday trading laws, Damian Sumner head of Retail Agency at JLL, said: “With people able to shop online 24/7, the physical retail world needs to be able to compete, encouraging consumers back onto our high streets and into shopping centres alongside other catering, leisure and community pursuits.

“The news is fundamentally disappointing for the retail industry particularly at a time when the government seem unable to address the wider assistance required for retailers including business rates and cheaper car parking tariffs.

“That said, the concerns that were voiced by MP's about this proposal are concerns that we share. Devolution of trading hour decisions to local authorities will mean mixed decisions at a local level which will cause havoc with retailers' central decisions on matters such as employment, supply and even the rent they can afford to pay. We also don't believe that local authorities have the relevant knowledge or skills to take these decisions.”
