JLL sweeps board at Green Apple Environment Awards

JLL’s Property and asset management team scoop awards for energy efficiency and management

JLL has scooped a range of accolades at the Green Apple Environment Awards. These are the annual international awards to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

Several of JLL's managed shopping centre and offices received awards for the work they have undertaken on carbon reduction, boosting energy and lighting efficiency and improving waste efficiency.

JLL scooped bronze, silver and gold for carbon reduction programmes in office building One London Wall, Broadway shopping Centre in Bexleyheath and Middleton Grange shopping centre in Hartlepool, respectively.  Middleton was granted a gold for a project undertaken by management to reduce waste production and energy use across the centre.  The project aimed to reuse and recycle as much as possible and encourage tenants to reduce their own energy and waste production.

In the energy efficiency category, JLL received two regional gold awards for Four Seasons Shopping Centre in Mansfield and 60 Queen Victoria Street and a regional silver for the Pavilions in Uxbridge. They also claimed the overall UK silver award for work on the Thistles in Stirling.

The award was received for the Thistles as a result of the successful preparation of a waste management plan which successfully reduced costs of diverting waste to landfill, growing retailer awareness of waste costs and sustainability initiatives. Training was also provided to the centre's cleaning team to increase their awareness of waste disposal costs and the importance of recycling.

The team also picked up the Green Ambassador award for the Dolphin shopping centre, Poole. Dolphin Shopping Centre is a large centre with intensive cleaning requirements and in late 2014 the centre embarked on a project to address the number of different chemicals being used to clean the shopping centre.  The aim of this was not only to introduce a chemical free cleaning solution, but to prove this would clean the centre to the standard it was accustomed to.  Introducing a new system removed chemicals from the daily cleaning regime and is also projected to save the centre an estimated £12,000 a year on cleaning consumables.

Abigail Dean, head of Sustainability in JLL's Property & Asset management team, commented: "Improving sustainability through carbon reduction and waste management programmes saves time and money and makes good business sense. It is what our clients and tenants expect from us and we are very pleased that the strategies we have employed in our managed centres have been recognised as exemplars for other centres and agents to follow."
