Commenting on the findings of the Lord Davies report into women on boards, JLL UK's HR Director and UK Board member Virginia Rothwell, commented: "Lord Davies is right to maintain the voluntary target approach. Barriers to reaching Board level occur at earlier levels in women's careers, and it's incumbent upon executive boards and HR leaders to removing these barriers. Proactively providing Board sponsored development opportunities, getting the approach to recruitment right to encourage women into traditional male dominated areas, offering flexible working opportunities are just some of the ways to ensure that a higher percentage of talented women are available for the top jobs.
"We have been quite behind on this agenda in the property industry, but through various industry wide collaborations and our own actions we are addressing our goal to increase the number of women taking up senior leadership roles. We are moving the needle with our executive now made of 22% women and our shadow board made up of 33% women. Specific actions are under way including focussed development opportunities for our talented women, the establishment of our Women's Network, and revising policies in areas such as maternity leave which may discourage women from wanting to be considered for the top job. Another key element is giving training to senior business leaders to challenge issues such as unconscious bias to ensure that we have a rich diversity of talent on our boards."
