JLL comments on Chancellor’s devolution package for Manchester

“The creation of a local land commission as part of the Chancellor’s devolution package for Manchester, like any other initiative providing greater autonomy for the city, is a good thing. There’s already a positive story to tell in the city’s development, and the level of control this commission will have and how it will work in practice will be key to how much impact it has.

“Ideally the commission will play a major role in bringing forward public sector land and buildings for residential use to address the shortage of much needed housing and maintain economic growth in the region.

“In contrast, given that connectivity between regions is key to further unlocking the Chancellor’s Northern Powerhouse concept, many will be disappointed with the omission of further infrastructure spend for the region and the missed opportunity to announce investment in electrifying the trans-Pennine railway line.”
