Tony Lloyd selected as Greater Manchester interim mayor

David Lathwood, North West lead director at JLL comments

"Much has changed since 2012, when Manchester voted for the status quo and rejected establishing a mayoral role. This appointment now comes as part of a deal which gives the city greater power over its future. It will also be key in ensuring much of the rhetoric we've seen to date starts to become a reality.

"The city's strong base of skills, influx of talent and good infrastructure will continue to see it attract global investment and we're already seeing this move north out of the capital. While it's clear the city hasn't been held back by a lack of autonomy, having civic budgets managed locally makes sense and will allow those on the ground to help direct money to ensure Manchester continues develops with this in mind.

"It's also a move from the centralised system we've had in the UK which differs from our peers around the world. Having Manchester taking the lead on how this could be modelled across other regions is further evidence of the strong position the city is in."
