JLL UK Retail comments on latest Kantar Worldpanel figures

JLL UK response to the latest Kantar Worldpanel figures which show a historic grocery market contraction

London, 18th November 2014- In response to the latest Kantar Worldpanel figures which show a historic grocery market contraction, Tom Edson, Head of food stores at JLL commented: “These latest results show that the price war that has been ignited by the big four in response to the discount retailer threat has led to the contraction of the grocery market and further deflation. At present, this strategy isn’t working and we wait to see if it will bear fruit, but the continued success of Waitrose at the other end of the spectrum highlights that brand and provenance are still of fundamental importance to the consumer. After 10 years of the food store space race, we will now start to see greater focus from the big four on rightsizing their store portfolios, as they adapt to the changing retailing environment and customer habits. They will ‘sweat’ their stores so they are more space efficient in an attempt to improve sales intensities. Some measures may include downsizing individual stores and introducing complimentary retailers and concessions.”
