JLL’s Head of UK Retail comments on Kantar Worldpanel grocery share figures

Tim Vallance comments on Kantar Worldpanel’s latest grocery share figures.

LONDON, 21st October 2014- Commenting , Tim Vallance Head of UK Retail at JLL, said: “The continued growth of Waitrose sales highlights that consumers value the best choice in terms of range, purchase options, provenance and quality as much as price. Asda is still leader of the big four pack which can be attributed in part to their dominance in discount clothing, but also the continued popularity of their growing online operations, however, Tesco are still the biggest and their slide may stop at any time with the new management regime. Their figures due out this week will make interesting reading.

“The supermarket war rumbles on, but the strategy can’t continue to be a race to cut the price of milk and vegetables or the grocery sector will continue to shrink. For instance, the opening of Waitrose’s latest travel outlet opposite Manchester Piccadilly Station to capture more sales from so-called 'transumers,’ demonstrates the importance for retailers to be well-located, connected and savvy in order to link supply and demand effectively.”
