JLL supports ‘Phone Free Friday’ to raise money for Samaritans

Charity partner launches campaign to ask supporters to turn their phones off for a day

London, 23rd June, 2014 - On Friday JLL's staff members locked their personal mobiles away to raise awareness of the work of charity partner Samaritans, as well as doing some crucial fundraising.

Friday 20th June was designated by the charity as ‘Phone Free Friday’ with the aim to get as many supporters as possible to take up the challenge to go without their personal mobile for the day (from 9am – 5pm).  This puts people to the ultimate test, by laying down the gauntlet to go without their personal mobile phones from 9am-5pm on 20 June. Participants who can’t last the whole day without their phones will face penalties. The day asks people to make a donation of £4 to Samaritans, the cost of answering one call for help.

Samaritans answered 5.23 million calls for help over the past 12 months, the highest number for five years. Funds raised from Phone Free Friday will allow the helpline to be there for more people in need of support.

Andrew Renshaw, Lead Director of JLL’s Valuation and Professional Advisory group commented: “We are very pleased to have been involved in the launch and promotion of the campaign, even having a visit from the Phone Free Friday mascot Fred. We support our charity partner through a whole host of  activities from cake sales to sporting events, including our annual industry wide Triathlon event in July, and have raised over £ 350,000 so far. This campaign will really remind people how important communication is and the vital work Samaritans do.”

Catherine Johnstone, Samaritans’ CEO, added: “Samaritans answers more than 5 million calls for help every year, and we need to make sure we continue to be there for anyone struggling to cope. We are asking our supporters to turn off their personal mobile phones for one day and donate, so we can answer more calls. It is fantastic that staff at JLL are supporting Phone Free Friday, and we really hope that this will encourage others to take part.”
