Commenting on the Government’s decision to improve and streamline the planning system, announced in the 2014 Budget today, Jeff Field, Director of Planning at JLL, said: “Further relaxations in the planning system are helpful. Whilst they may not generate significant wins they at least provide localised stimulus whilst also freeing up local authorities to focus on the real target of delivering housing and jobs.
“Plans for a new generation of garden cities across the country is a bold move but it will take some considerable time to deliver and not everyone will want to live in such communities. With house price inflation and rising rents in London, the government needs to provide other pressure valves. It should send out a clear policy message in the south east that it is serious about delivering on new housing. It should also immediately announce extensions, beyond 3 years, for the new permitted development rights to convert offices to housing.”
