Smiths airport scanners help keep air travellers safe. Seeing growth in Asia, this hi-tech manufacturer wanted to relocate production from Europe to control costs, get closer to customers and carry the important ‘made in Asia’ tag. But where, in this huge market, would be the perfect location? To answer this question, Smiths engaged JLL. Our team looks at markets in three dimensions, analysing costs, business climate and risk. They also have superb local contacts and are adept at balancing the differing needs of senior client teams. For Smiths, we shortlisted three countries – Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia – then visited them to talk to local representatives, government figures and other companies.
Our choice, Johor Bahru in Malaysia, presented the ideal balance of cost and risk. With excellent connections to Singapore, it offers a lower-cost environment that’s also close to a cluster of nearby industries. After negotiation, we were also able to secure government concessions worth £3.5m.Only JLL has the resource to work across borders in this way.
