Case Study

Selfridges Retail Ltd

Planning image - SelfridgesProviding advice for over 15 years to help keep this world-renowned department store ahead of the curve.

The JLL Planning Team has been acting as the planning consultant for Selfridges Retail Ltd for over 15 years. The team has undertaken a range of instructions during this time that have helped to maintain the condition of the iconic flagship department store whilst enabling it to change to reflect the dynamism of the retail market.

Projects have ranged from securing permission for redevelopment and refurbishment of the Selfridges Hotel to securing temporary consent for a Pierre Koffmann restaurant at the roof of the building as part of the 2010 London Restaurant Festival.

The store faces the dual challenge of continuously adapting to maintain its reputation as a world renowned retail department store, whilst also protecting and preserving the heritage value of the listed building.

We mediate between these conflicting priorities to ensure that all schemes meet the planning, design and conservation requirements of Westminster City Council. Where appropriate, we show sensitivity to the department store’s proximity to existing residential apartments and recognise, for example, the need to ameliorate the impact of new plant or open air facilities such as the roof top restaurant. We also act as the lead consultant on all major instructions to provide comprehensive planning advice and project management services.

"The Jones Lang LaSalle Planning Team has been providing Selfridges with commercial planning advice for over 10 years. The team has diligently and professionally dealt with a number of complex and sensitive issues in this time, to deliver planning and listed building consents that have added significant value to our portfolio. Nothing is too much trouble and they really understand our business. They also acted as expert planning witness in a recent rating appeal, which resulted in Selfridges receiving a significant rebate."
Alec Latimer, Company Secretary, Selfridges
