Case Study

Bonhams Auctioneers

The London Planning team was appointed to deliver a series of major planning permissions on a complex site for Bonhams Auctioneers, whose auction space is now perceived to be one of, if not the best in the world.

We overcame some major challenges; the site is partly grade II listed and sits within a Conservation Area, constraints abounded, including around the proposed Crossrail route (which runs directly beneath the site with a grouting shaft to the side), as well as a well-educated and vociferous local community, resulting in the planning strategy needing to be developed alongside concerted consultation.

We led detailed briefings with the Cabinet Member for Planning, to secure ‘buy-in’ to the proposals, enabling the listed building consent application to be granted in July 2011, followed by the main redevelopment application in November 2011, with a second application made around the same time for changes to the retail component, all of which enabled Bonhams to continue to operate on site during construction.

The Planning team successfully delivered consents within an extremely constrained and tight timescale, with no onerous planning conditions and no financial obligations due upon demolition of the existing buildings, thus ensuring mitigated major success story for the London art world.
